LIFE IN MANCHESTER

article 1

Originally a Roman outpost, Manchester has evolved into an industrialised city playing a key role in Britain's industrial revolution. Manchester is now the UK's second largest city, with over 2½ million people living in the main districts and over 7 million in Manchester's surrounding areas.

In the past twenty years Manchester has undergone extensive growth and redevelopment, benefiting from huge government and EU funding together with private investment. In addition, Manchester's student population is in excess of 50,000, adding both to the city's economy and to the cosmopolitan feel of the city's bars, restaurants and nightlife. Modern day Manchester is arguably one of the fastest developing contemporary cities in the UK, attracting investment from all over the world.
